Se juega en la calle, en las plazas y en la Biblioteca Principal (Hauptbücherei); en el "48-Tandler" (un mercado de segunda mano) e incluso en las cafeterías se vuelve a jugar, casi como en los viejos tiempos. Hay una mujer que está actuando como multiplicadora del ajedrez en la capital de Austria. Curiosamente es una ajedrecista neerlandesa, que es de Groninga, Kineke Mulder. ¡Fíjense en todos los proyectos e iniciativas que ha puesto en marcha!

Las cultura de las cafeterías de Viena
Viena es la cuna de la cultura del ajedrez en las cafeterías. Muchos clubes de ajedrez, en su tiempo, se fundaron en las cafeterías de la ciudad y hasta solían tener sus sedes ahí de manera permanente. Al menos eso era así durante mucho tiempo. Desde luego, al pensar en Viena, en las cafeterías y el ajedrez, en seguida nos vienen a la cabeza imágenes de personas jugando al ajedrez mientras se están tomando un cafecito, manteniendo conversaciones inteligentes o hasta filosóficas.
Aparte del billar y de los dardos, el ajedrez probablemente será el único deporte (sí: deporte) que no requiere ni gancha, ni pista, ni campo de juego. Normalmente, no suele haber hi daños físicos ni lesiones al ejecer ese deporte.
A lo largo de las últimas décadas, sin embargo, el ajedrez había estado desapareciendo de las cafeterías, poco a poco. La gente jugaba más en casa o en los clubes con sedes particulares.
Pero dicha situación ha vuelto a cambiar desde que se instaló en la ciudad una mujer neerlandesa, proveniendo de Groninga, originalmente. Su nombre es Kineke Mulder.
Fue en 2015/2016 cuando había una ola de refugiados políticos instálandose en la ciudad, que se le ocurrió la idea de unir y entretener a la gente con el juego ciencia. Muchos refugiados llegaron primero a Viena y no sabían qué hacer ni a dónde ir.
Kineke se acercó a los sitios donde había gente que no sabía qué hacer. Les entregó tableros de ajedrez y, donde era necesario explicó las reglas. Pero muchos ya sabían jugar. Se llevó una alegría al ver que con el ajedrez, la gente se podía olvidar de sus preocupaciones y problemas, al menos durante un rato. Su idea había sido un éxito y eso le animó a seguir por esa misma vía.
En la Biblioteca Principal de Viena
El ex equipo nacional de Austría (de 1996), hasta se animó a disputar un torneo de ajedrez relámpago. Acudieron casi todas las integrantes del equipo: MIF Helene Mira, MFF Jutta Borek und MFF Maria Horvath.

Por cierto, este año es el centenario de la Federación Austríaca de Ajedrez.
