Dos éxitos consecutivos
Un total de 84 jugadores, entre ellos 10 GM y un MI, participan en el grupo A (>1500) del Hit Open, en Eslovenia. El torneo suizo a 9 rondas, de 8 días de duración, está organizado por el Club de Ajedrez Nova Gorica del 16 al 23 de marzo. El control de tiempo del torneo es de 90 minutos para la partida más incrementos de 30 segundos desde el primer movimiento.
Leon Luke Mendonca, embajador de las marcas Geno y Microsense, está teniendo una gran racha en los torneos europeos. Hace una semana, ganó la prueba principal del ChessOrg Festival, en Bad Woerishofen, con una puntuación de 7½/9. Ahora, en la 27ª edición del Hit Open, el joven se ha superado a sí mismo al encadenar ocho victorias consecutivas para proclamarse vencedor del torneo a falta de una ronda.
El 67º jugador indio en conseguir el título de gran maestro, que recibió en enero de 2021, es ahora el 16º jugador de 20 años o menos mejor clasificado en la lista de clasificaciones en vivo. Mendonca cumplió 17 años el 13 de marzo.

En la octava ronda, el joven derrotó al GM Nigel Davies con blancas. Davies avanzó su peón a g5 en el movimiento 13.
Las negras parecen obligar a las blancas a cambiar el alfil por el caballo en e5. Sin embargo, las blancas no están obligadas en absoluto a hacerlo. Leon salió con 14.Axg5 Cxc4 15.Tac1 Tg8 16.Ah4, manteniendo el alfil en la importante diagonal, de modo que el rey negro no puede enrocarse su camino hacia la seguridad fácilmente.
16...b5? fue el primer error. A continuación las cosas iban de mal en peor para las negras. Tras 17.b3, el movimeinto de Davies, Df4?? fue un error gordo.
18.Rh1 sale de la clavada, lo que significa que tanto la dama de f4 como el caballo de c4 están bajo ataque. 18...Dd2 19.Tfd1 y las negras se rinden, ya que no hay forma de salvar a la dama y evitar Td8# al mismo tiempo. Una forma fantástica de sumar 8/8 puntos y ganar el torneo.
