01/07/2009 – El GM paraguayo Axel Bachmann (en la foto) estuvo cerca de adueñarse del primer lugar en solitario, al lograr ventaja ante el MI argentino Guillermo Soppe en la tercera ronda del Grupo A del II Magistral Ciudad de Asunción, Copa Roggio, pero Soppe se defendió muy bien y la partida terminó en tablas. Las otras partidas de la tercera ronda, disputada en los salones del restaurante La Pérgola Jardín, también terminaron en empate tras largas luchas, por lo que sigue el cuádruple empate en el primer puesto. En Rodríguez (2524) ½ - Cornejo (2383) ½ se jugó la apertura del alfil.
En el medio juego el GM uruguayo quedó con un fuerte alfil y posición preferible; se llegó a un final de torres con peón de ventaja para Rodríguez, pero de muy difícil concreción, y Cornejo logró el empate.

En Zambrana (2473) ½ - Vera (2475) ½ se jugó una Siciliana Variante Najdorf, muy de moda, al ser utilizada por Topalov, las blancas innovaron con 14.De2 y posteriormente sacrificaron la calidad, el rey negro quedó expuesto, pero la iniciativa blanca dio sólo para tablas.
Bachmann (2555) - Soppe (2427) fue una Defensa Caro Kann, Variante 3.e5, donde el juego quedó muy cerrado, tras largas maniobras se abrió la columna a, con a3, lo que Bachmann consideró precipitado, luego maniobró largamente para romper con b4, abriendo más el juego, y tras una reñida lucha, terminó en tablas.

Luján (2360) ½ - Cubas (2434)½ fue una Apertura Reti, con una dudosa decisión, 22…Dxe7?, las negras quedaron con un final inferior por el fuerte peón pasado blanco en a7, en las complicaciones las blancas consiguieron una ventaja clara, pero no pudieron imponerla por el agresivo juego de Cubas.
Brito (2364) ½ - Coelho (2398) ½ fue un Ataque Rauzer de la Defensa Siciliana, las blancas sacrificaron un peón, por el que consiguieron cierta compensación, y luego un final ventajoso, que se repartió el punto en posición aún compleja.
