El Magistral de Punta del Este se lleva a cabo del 14 al 20 de marzo en el Hotel del Lago, como parte del Festival Internacional de Ajedrez de Punta del Este. Se trata de un torneo cerrado a doble vuelta que reunirá a seis jugadores: cuatro Grandes Maestros (GM) y dos Maestros Internacionales (MI), todos ellos representantes de países de habla hispana.
El MI argentino Faustino Oro, de 11 años, y el MI mexicano Sion Galaviz, de 19 años, buscan obtener la norma de GM, lo que requiere alcanzar 6½ puntos en 10 partidas. Para Oro, que el año pasado se convirtió en el Maestro Internacional más joven de la historia, esta sería su primera norma de GM. Galaviz, por su parte, intentará conseguir su tercera y última norma, lo que le permitiría completar los requisitos para el título de Gran Maestro.
Las partidas se jugarán a ritmo clásico, con jornadas de doble ronda programadas para el sábado 15, el lunes 17 y el miércoles 19 de marzo. La última ronda se disputará el jueves 20 de marzo a las 17:00 hora local. El árbitro del torneo será Leandro Plotinsky, presidente del Círculo de Ajedrez Torre Blanca de Buenos Aires.
