La leyenda de fútbol Diego Armando Maradona usó una de sus famosas manos para dar el toque final a la ceremonia de clausura del festival más largo de la historia, no de fútbol, sino de ajedrez.
Maradona engalanó la ceremonia de clausura y jugó la Francesa (1...e6 en respuesta a 1.e4)
El festival duró 40 días y se llevó a cabo para conmemorar el 40 aniversario de los
Emiratos Árabes. Comenzó el pasado día 2 de diciembre de 2011, el Día Nacional de los
Emiratos Árabes. Bajo el lema "We all love Khalifa" ("Todos le queremos al
Califa"), en honor del presidente de los EAU, la campaña de "Ajedrez y
sociedad" fue organizada por el club de ajedrez de Al Ain, bajo el patronato del
jeque sultán Bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, presidente de la Federación Asiática de Ajedrez.
Maradona, que forma parte del club de los 50 mejores personajes de la historia del deporte, estuvo presente en el acto de clausura del acontecimiento y firmó un acuerdo con el club Yellow Empire
de Al Wasl como mejor club de deporte de EAU. El acuerdo con Maradona ha provocado una amplia cobertura en los medios de comunicación a nivel internacional.
Hisham Al Taher, secretario general de la Federación Asiática de Ajedrez y
director del club de ajedrez Al Ain, regaló la camiseta oficial a Maradona, con la foto del
presidente de los EAU, Su Alteza Jeque bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

La campaña resaltó los efectos benéficos del ajedrez en el desarrollo mental de los niños:
la toma de decisiones, las capacidades de pensar de manera lógica, estratégica,
la planificación y la memoria, asimismo su capacidad de concentración y de gestionar bien
con un tiempo limitado, al igual que otros muchos efectos positivos.

Además hubo dos charlas sobre temas variados con más de 500
espectadores. El ingeniero Ahmed Zarouni y el árbitro internacional Mehrdad Pahlevanzadeh dieron
una conferencia sobre el ajedrez a través de Internet y mostraron cómo se manejan las aplicaciones para iPhone e iPad.
