Markus Ragger nació en Klagenfurt, Austria, el 5 de febrero de 1988. Tras graduar en el colegio con destinción en el Colegio Ingeborg Bachmann Gymnasium Klagenfurt, realizó el servicio civil en el Centro para Personas Discapacitadas, igualmente en Klagenfurt. Estudió Matemáticas en la Universidad de Klagenfurt durante un semestre y después de dedicó al ajedrez por completo. Markus es jugador profesional de ajedrez, tiene dos hijos y vive en Graz.
