El abierto de la Universidad Técnica de Riga se jugó inmediatamente después de la olimpiada, entre el 15 y el 14 de agosto de 2014. Para Sam Shankland esta programación tan exigente resultó serlo demasiado. Tras su brillante rendimiento en la olimpiada, comenzó el torneo con 0.5/2 y decidió limitar el daño a su Elo, para lo que se tomó un merecido descanso.

El GM armenio Hrant Melkumyan está entre los 5 mejores de su país, pero no entró en la selección olímpica. Bien descansado, comenzó en Riga con 6 de 6, ganando sus partidas con un ajedrez técnicamente sólido.

Tras su feroz comienzo, frenó algo y terminó el torneo con 3 tablas, sumando al final 7.5/9. Eso dio opciones para alcanzarlo al joven GM húngaro Richard Rapport, que terminó el torneo también con 7.5/9 pero con un peor coeficiente de desempate terminó segundo.

Encabezando el grupo con medio punto menos y tercero en la tabla final, quedó el venezolano Eduardo Iturrizaga.
