En el año 2011 se cumple el centenario del nacimiento del ex campeón
del mundo de ajedrez Mikhail Botvinnik (17 de agosto de 1911 - 5 de mayo de 1995), que se conmemora con varios torneos en Rusia. Hace poco concluyó el Festival Internacional de Ajedrez en San Petersburgo y ahora comienza el Memorial Botvinnik de Ajedrez Rápido en Moscú, que tendrá lugar los días 2 y 3 de septiembre.
El torneo se celebrará en el Centro de Tecnologías Digitales en Moscú, la capital de Rusia. Hay un torneo extremadamente fuerte y
una prueba femenina. Los participantes en el torneo absoluto son Anand, Kramnik, Carlsen y Aronian. Koneru Humpy, Tatiana Kosintseva, Elina Danielian y Viktorija Cmilyte competirán en la sección femenina.

Los jugadores darán una rueda de prensa antes de la ceremonia inaugural el viernes, día 2 de septiembre de 2011 y el número uno del mundo, Magnus Carlsen recibirá el "Óscar del Ajedrez 2010", entregado por la Federación Rusa de Ajedrez.
El formato del torneo es de liga a doble vuelta, es decir seis partidas. El control de tiempo es de 25 minutos + 10 segundos por movimiento
y jugador, a partir del comienzo de la partida. Las tres primeras rondas se disputarán el 2 de septiembre y las restantes al día siguiente, sábado 3 de septiembre.
Pero hay una regla un poco curiosa: el reloj se parará en mitad de la partida y ambos jugadores tienen que desvelar sus pensamientos sobre la posición.
Los oponentes están escuchando música para no enterarse de las reflexiones y comentarios
del contrincante. Es la primera vez que se lleva a cabo un experimento de este tipo a tan alto nivel de competición. Todo una sugerencia atrevida por parte de los organizadores y sin duda hará todo aún más interesante y entretenido para los espectadores, a la vez
que supone un reto especial para los jugadores.

Poco tiempo después de este interesante desafío, los jugadores
(hombres y mujeres) formarán equipos para disputar un duelo de partidas mixtas de ajedrez rápido. Los emparejamientos se han realizado casi
geográficamente: Anand/Humpy (India), Kramnik/Kosintseva (Rusia), Aronian/Danielian (Armenia) y Carlsen/Cmilyte (Noruega
/ Lituania). Se enfrentarán por parejas y se tienen que turnar a la hora de realizar los movimientos, sin consultarse. Eso normalmente suele resultar muy divertido, con mucha telepatía, confusiones y risas.
El acto final será una exhibición de partidas simultáneas en 80 tableros en la cual cada una de las ocho estrellas se enfrentará con diez jóvenes talentos. Las partidas rápidas comenzarán a las 15:00 hora de Moscú (dos horas antes en Europa
Central) y habrá retransmisiones en directo en la web de la
Federación Rusa de Ajedrez.
