Actualmente se están disputando el Campeonato del Mundo de veteranos por equipos, en Dresde (Alemania). En comparación con los comienzos de dicho campeonato en el cual en 2004 únicamente participaron 12 equipos, con los años ha ido aumentando mucho la participación. Este año se presentan 84 equipos, de 16 naciones.
El hotel donde se disputa el campeonato
En Dresde se pueden descubrir muchas caras conocidas en los equipos de mayores de 50. Entre los más conocidos están los grandes maestros Nigel Short, John Nunn y Jonathan Speelman, que acaparan también el papel de favoritos.
El capitán del equipo, Nigel Short (nacido en 1965) por primera vez puede participar en este campeonato por haber alcanzado la edad necesaria para ello. Es su segunda visita a Dresde después de la olimpiada de ajedrez de 2008.

El director del torneo, Dr. Dirk Jordan, explicó cuáles son las novedadas de esa nueva forma del mundial de veteranos por equipos:
"Hay dos torneos, pero vamos a premiar a tres campeones. Como en la sección absoluta participarán muchos equipos, habrá una separación de secciones. Hay dos grupos absolutos el grupo A (mayores de 50) y el grupo B (mayores de 65). En la sección femenina compiten tan solo 4 equipos que, debido a su joven edad, participarán en la competición (absoluta) del grupo A. El mejor equipo femenino recibirá el título de Campeón del Mundo de Veteranas por Equipos".
Participan varios equipos internacionales y en la competición de mayores de 65, por ejemplo, veremos que juegan muchas leyendas del ajedrez, como Yuri Balashov, Evgeny Vasiukov (ambos de Rusia), Wolfgang Uhlmann (Alemania), Andreas Dückstein (Austría) o Heikki Westerinen (Finlandia).
