Manuel Göttsching falleció el 4 de diciembre a los 70 años. El músico berlinés llegó a la música a finales de los años 1960 y en los 1970 fundó el grupo Ash Ra Tempel con Hartmut Enke y Klaus Schulze. Tocaban piezas meditativas y psicodélicas y les gustaba improvisar durante las actuaciones. A partir de 1971, Klaus Schulze siguió su propio camino, mientras que Göttsching y Enke continuaron el proyecto Ash Ra Tempel con varios otros músicos invitados.
El 12 de diciembre de 1981, Manuel Göttsching grabó en su "Studio Roma" berlinés una improvisación generada electrónicamente de casi una hora de duración, que hoy se considera un hito de la música tecno. Consta de sólo dos acordes, que varían a lo largo de la pieza.
Göttsching bautizó la composición "e2 - e4" y no sin razón. Su padre le había enseñado jugar al ajedrez y a Göttsching le gustaba echar alguna spartidas con sus colegas de la música.
Los nombres de las canciones del album "e2-e4" igualmente tienen títulos que se podrían relacionar con el ajedrez:
1. Ruhige Nervosität (nerviosismo tranquilo) 2. Gemässigter Aufbruch (salida moderada) 3. ...und Mittelspiel (y, mediojuego) 4. Ansatz (Aproximación) 5. Damen Eleganza (La eleganza de la dama) 6. Ehrenvoller Kampf (Una lucha honrable) 7. Hoheit weicht (su alteza se aleja, pero con momentum) 8. ...und Souveränität (y soberanidad) 9. Remis (Tablas.)
Sin embargo, fue sólo en 1984 cuando Klaus Schulze se decidió a producir la pieza. La una tirada del disco era de 1.000 ejemplares. Como imagen para la portada del disco, a juego con el título, eligieron un tablero de ajedrez. Hasta de tal manera, que sirve para jugar al tener a mano unas piezas de ajedrez.
Pero el album "e2-e4" más o menos pasó por desapercibido hasta que el legendario "Studio 54" en Nueva York lo descubirió y eligió la genial música como apertura de sus noches de club, lo que convirtió a "e2-e4" en un éxito "de culto" en la escena de clubes de música.
A finales de los 80, los productores italianos de "Sueño Latino" lanzaron una remezcla que no tardó en sonar en todas las pistas de baile del mundo. Desde entonces, se han creado numerosas remezclas.
Con motivo de su 25 aniversario en 2006, se revisitó la composición techno original y Göttsching la interpretó en directo en varias ocasiones, entre ellas en la Elbphilharmonie de Hamburgo, en 2018.
A Göttsching le habría gustado interpretar "e2-e4" a mayor escala como espectáculo multimedia, pero la pandemia del coronavirus puso trabas a la idea.
