What exactly is a fortress in chess? And what kind of fortresses would we like to introduce to you in the CBM? In the introductory video, Dorian Rogozenco explores these and other questions.
First of all, it is important to realise that every fortress is a theoretical draw, but not every theoretical draw is a fortress. An example:
This position is from the game Caruana - Vachier-Lagrave (2021). It's a theoretical draw, but Black has to play very precisely to hold the draw. In a classical fortress, the situation is completely different: once you've managed to build the fortress, the rest is child's play! Your opponents can do whatever they like with their material advantage - you simply stay in the fortress, don't respond to any provocations and the draw is safe!
In his column, Rogozenco presents one fortress in each issue. This issue's fortress looks like this:
Black has only a bishop and a knight against the queen - but with the king in the corner and the right constellation of Black’s minor pieces, there is no for White to win the game!
In addition to the presentation of the fortress, Rogozenco offers six interactive videos to help you memorise the fortress motif in a playful way. Have fun!
