Muchos consideran a Boris Spassky el más talentoso de todos los campeones del mundo. El gran talento ajedrecístico de Spassky, de nueve años, fue descubierto en el Palacio de los Pioneros (San Petersburgo) y alentado por entrenadores como Vladimir Zak. En 1953, la Federación Mundial de Ajedrez nombró al joven de 16 años Maestro Internacional y, en 1955, Gran Maestro, después de que Spassky lograra del 2º al 6º puesto en el Campeonato de la URSS y ganara el Campeonato Mundial Juvenil Sub-20.
En 1964 Spassky se clasificó para el Torneo de Candidatos en el Torneo Interzonal y se convirtió en el retador del Campeón del Mundo, Tigran Petrosian, en 1966. Sin embargo, Spassky sólo pudo derrotarle en el segundo intento en 1969 y se convirtió así en el 10º campeón mundial de ajedrez. En 1972, tuvo que defender su título en un angustioso encuentro contra Bobby Fischer. Con gran paciencia, Spassky soportó todos los reclamos de su contrincante. Finalmente perdió el match y el título.
En 1976, Boris Spassky emigró a Francia con su esposa y vivió en París durante mucho tiempo. Sólo regresó a Rusia en años posteriores. En los Campeonatos del Mundo de 1974, 1977 y 1980, Spassky volvió a participar en los matches de Candidatos, pero ya no pudo clasificarse como aspirante. En 1992, hubo una sensacional revancha contra Bobby Fischer en Yugoslavia, que Spassky también perdió.
En sus mejores momentos, Boris Spassky cultivó un estilo de ataque enérgico, con preferencia por aperturas agresivas como el Gambito de Rey. Pero también jugó las otras fases del juego como un campeón del mundo.

En 1964, Robert James Fischer hizo una lista de los diez mejores jugadores del mundo. Incluyó a Boris Spassky en esa lista, diciendo que sus partidas estaban marcadas por aperturas superagudas, sus propias aperturas, sus propias 'pequeñas líneas', como las llamaba Fischer, que le funcionaban bastante bien.
Spassky estaba ansioso por jugar aperturas muy agudas. Probablemente fue el único jugador de primera fila de su época que no tuvo problemas para jugar variantes de gambito. Jugaba la Marshall, el Gambito de Rey, la Anti-Moscú... no tenía problemas en jugar estas líneas tan agudas.
