Biel Chess Festival - ChessBase Magazine no. 221

From July 12 to 26, 2024, the Swiss city of Biel hosted its traditional chess festival for the 57th time. In the two GM tournaments ("Masters" and "Challengers"), with a field of six players each, there was once again a triathlon consisting of rapid, classical chess and blitz. The winners of these three disciplines then competed in a classical chess play-off to determine the overall winner.

In the Masters, Armenian Haik Martirosyan was in the lead after the rapid section. This was followed by five rounds of classical chess in the Swiss system. As a win here was rewarded with a full 4 points, there were hard-fought duels that pointed the way forward from the start.

Una posición de la partida Keymer vs. Le Liem Quang

After 56...Rxd6! 57.Kxd6 f4 in Keymer,V - Le,Q 0-1 the black passed pawns were unstoppable - Le Quang Liem Liem provides a detailed analysis of the game in CBM #221!

After the blitz tournament, there was a play-off with the four players who still had a mathematical chance of winning the overall title. On the second day, Le Quang Liem beat Praggnanandhaa with the black pieces to secure his third Biel triathlon victory in a row - the tournament format obviously suits the Vietnamese player!

In the final round of the Challengers, Saleh Salem won ahead of Donchenko and the surprisingly strong Rameshbabu Vaishal, who, like her brother in the Masters, finished third.
Alexander Donchenko comments on his win against the 2023 World Junior Champion Marc Andria Maurizzi.

33.Nxg7 Nxg7 34.Nf4 "The point behind Nxg7"

"In this critical position I found the only way to hold on to my advantage." 33.Nxg7 Nxg7 34.Nf4 "The point behind Nxg7. The other knight cuts off the queen from h2 and comes into play at speed.." In the endgame, Donchenko won the game, which proved to be very important in the final score.
