12/12/2017 – Los organizadores del Chess Classic de Londres han anunciado que cambiará el formato del torneo en 2018. Hasta la fecha, ha sido una liga de ajedrez clásico con 10 participantes. Pasará a un cuadrangular con los 4 mejores del circuito, disputando la "gran final del Grand Chess Tour". Será un enfrentamiento combinado de partidas a ritmo clásico, rápido y relámpago. Se pretende un formato más dinámico, apoyar el "Universal Rating System" (URS) que combina las valoraciones Elo de todas las modalidades de juego y evitar choques con el Campeonato del Mundo, que también se disputará en Londres el año que viene, del 9 al 28 de noviembre. Londres albergará la final del Grand Chess Tour 2018

El circuito del Grand Chess Tour 2018 concluirá en Londres, pero va a tener un nuevo formato. Los 4 mejores del circuito disputarán un cuadrangular con semifinales y final para determinar la clasificación final de tour (y los puestos 2, 3 y 4). Dicho cambio del formato del Chess Classic de Londres fue anunciado por la junta directiva del Grand Chess Tour el día de la octava ronda de la edición de 2017.
El nuevo formato del Grand Chess Tour enfrentará a los participantes en tres torneos con partidas rápidas y relámpago y también se mantendrá la tradicional Copa Sinquefield con lo cual se conserva el formático clásico.
Los organizadores han confirmado que se renovará el contrato de promoción con el Chess Club and Scholastic Center de San Luis, Chess Promotions Ltd, Colliers International France, Vivendi S.A. y Your Next Move™. Todos esos patrocinadores se han comprometido a participar en la financiación de los torneos. Han sido confirmados los torneos del Grand Chess Tour 2018 en París, Lovaina, San Luis y Londres.
Los 3 primeros del Grand Chess Tour 2017 (Magnus Carlsen, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave y Levon Aronian) se han clasificado automáticamente para el ciruito 2018. El resto del plantel será seleccionado en función de las valoraciones URS el 1 de enero de 2018 y por las valoraciones medias de los escalafones FIDE durante 2017.
