La primera victoria de Vishy Anand en una olimpiada de ajedrez tras 12 años de ausencia
La última olimpiada de ajedrez en la que había participado la estrella india, Vishy Anand, había sido en Turín en 2006. En su primera partida olímpica tras doce años de ausencia, se apuntó una brillante victoria frente al GM Markus Ragger:

Uno de los duelos más emocionantes de la ronda va a ser el enfrentamiento Holanda vs. EE. UU. Anish Giri se enfrentará con Fabiano Caruana en el primer tablero. Tras la segunda ronda, Anish Giri dio su impresión acerca del equipo estadounidense en una vídeo entrevista:

La noticia más llamativa de la segunda ronda en la sección femenina fue la derrota de la rusas en manos de las uzbecas. Las partidas en los primeros tres tableros concluyeron en tablas y la victoria decisiva fue conquistada por la jugadora uzbeca Nodira Nadirjanova en el cuarto tablero.

Natalia Zhukova (Ucrania) se apuntó una importante victoria en el tecer tablero. Las demás partida conclyueron en tablas. En realidad Anna Muzychuk y Anna Ushenina estaban perdidas en sus respectivas partidas, pero sobrevivieron.
