03/01/2011 – El primer día del año 2011 fue el de descanso en el LIII Torneo di Capodanno, en Reggio Emilia (Italia) Sin embargo, no lo pudieron disfrutar Alexander Morozevich y David Navara, que tuvieron que disputar la partida que había sido aplazada debido a la tardía llegada de Morozevich por las malas condiciones meteorológicas. Ganó Morozevich. En la quinta ronda de ayer, Vassily Ivanchuk (en la foto) logró una victoria con negras frente al GM local Michele Godena. Las demás partidas terminaron en empates. El sábado, Morozevich y Navara disputaron la partida que había sido aplazada debido a la tardía llegada de Morozevich, que había estado atrapado en Moscú porque cerraron el aeropuerto por los temporales de nieve. En todo caso, Morozevich comenzó el año nuevo con buen pie y ganó la partida contra Navara. En la partida de la quinta ronda de ayer, el moscovita tuvo que verse las caras con el líder del torneo, el español Paco Vallejo. La apertura parecía sorprender al GM español que se pasó mucho tiempo pensando ya durante los primeros 16 movimientos, pero se mantenía firme y la línea que jugaron le permitió mantenerse durante el final y empatar la partida con Morozevich.
Al comienzo la posición de Michele Godena parecía ser sólida y las maniobras de Ivanchuk no le preocupaban demasiado. Pero más adelante el GM ucranio seguía luchando, evitando cualquier tipo de maniobras tácticas. Finalmente se impuso a Godena, gracias a una serie de movimientos raros que realizó este último. De esta manera, Vassily Ivanchuk se ha acercado al líder, Vallejo (4/5), a un punto (3/5).
Finalmente la partida entre Caruana y Gashimov también terminó en empate. La clasificación sigue teniendo el mismo orden y Paco se ha acercado un paso más hacia la victoria del torneo.

El día 2 de enero de 2011 se disputó el I Torneo de Ajedrez Rápido "Capodanno Reggio Emilia“, que contó con la participación de fuertes jugadores italianos e internacionales. La ganadora fue
la WGM Yulia Kochetkova (novia de Movsesian). El segundo lugar lo ocupó el MI Andrea Stella, un joven jugador italiano y en la tercera posición quedó
la MI Olga Zimina. Todos ellos sumaron 6,5 puntos en 8 rondas.
