Vishy Anand acerca de su duelo con Vladimir Kramnik en Campeonato 2008, disputado en Bonn (Alemania)
En 1995 Vishy Anand disputó el primer duelo por la corona mundial contra Garry Kasparov, en Nueva York. Las primeras ocho partidas del desafío concluyeron en tablas, pero a continuación, Anand ganó la novena partida y tomó el mando con 1-0. Pero ahí no terminó la historia. Kasparov ganó las partidas 11, 13 y 14 y ganó el duelo con 10,5:7,5.
Más adelante, en el año 2000, Vishy Anand se coronó Campeón del Mundo de la FIDE y en 2007 ganó el torneo por el título mundial, disputado en México D. F. Se impuso con medio punto de ventaja frente a Vladimir Kramnik y se coronó el XV Campeón del Mundo de Ajedrez de la historia oficialmente.
Pero para ligitimarse como "verdadero" Campeón del Mundo, según las pautas y la tradición de Steinitz, aún le faltaba vencerle a Vladimir Kramnik en un duelo. Kramnik había ganado el títulod e Campeón del Mundo en el año 2000 contra Garry Kasparov, respectivamente.
En 2008 por fin hubo un duelo directo entre Vishy Anand y Vladimir Kramnik en Bonn (Alemania). Anand ganó de manera convincente con 6,5:4,5. La sorpresa más destacada para los expertos entonces fue la apertura que planteó ahí. A pesar de que Anand pasaba por ser un típico jugador de 1.e4, en sus partidas contra Vladimir Kramnik planteó la apertura 1.d4 y encima con éxito.
