Kovacevic: Gracias. Había estudiado la Defensa Francesa muy detenidamente y me la conozco muy bien. La variante que juega Fischer no vale para mucho.
¿El movimiento b6 fue una novedad, verdad?
Sí, antes se solía jugar 9...c5, tal y como lo hacía Euwe en su duelo con Alekhine en el Campeonato del Mundo en 1935. También Byrne jugó eso contra Fischer hace cuatro años. El movimiento no está mal. Pero b6 es mucho mejor. Permite que entre en juego el alfil c8.
¿A qué edad aprendió a jugar al ajedrez?
Tarde. Tenía quince años cuando aprendí a jugar. Fue en el ejército de la marina, en Split. Avanzaba muy bien ahí. En 1959 me coroné Campeón de Croacia Juvenil y quedé tercero en el Campeonato de Yugoslavia. En 1961 era candidato de maestro. Después realicé un estudio universitario.
¿Qué estudió?
Electrotecnología. Me ofrecieron un puesto de trabajo como asistente en esa profesión, pero al fin y al cabo opté por la carrera de ajedrecista.

Sí, el año pasado quedé Campeón Absoluto Individual de Croacia.
¿Ud. sigue viviendo en Dubrovnik?
No, este año me mudé a Zagreb gezogen. Ahora estoy jugando con el club SK Mladost.
¿Es Usted jugador de ajedrez profesional?
No exclusivamente. Trabajo como reportero de deportes para la radio en Zagreb.
