El Torneo Magistral cuenta con la participación de ocho jugadores (cuatro hombres y cuatro mujeres), que disputan un torneo rápido por sistema cerrado a doble vuelta. Las partidas se juegan con un control de tiempo de 30 minutos para todo el encuentro más un incremento de 5 segundos por jugada.

Organizado por Alumni–USAL y el Ayuntamiento, el evento reúne a seis grandes maestros de cinco países, entre ellos Ruslan Ponomariov y Sara Khadem. Con torneos, conferencias y actividades solidarias, el certamen celebra tanto la excelencia deportiva como el legado histórico del ajedrez salmantino.
