Samunenkov y Lodici puntúan en la ronda final para subir al podio
El Festival Mundial de Ajedrez de Cerdeña 2025, que se celebró del 27 de abril al 3 de mayo, concluyó con la victoria del gran maestro estadounidense Christopher Yoo.
Con tan solo 18 años, Yoo se alzó con la victoria gracias a una impresionante puntuación de 7½ sobre 9. A lo largo del torneo de nueve rondas, consiguió seis victorias y tres tablas. Su campaña comenzó de forma dominante, con cinco victorias consecutivas que marcaron el ritmo de la competición. Tras entablar en la sexta ronda, se enfrentó al GM italiano Francesco Sonis en la séptima ronda y logró una victoria clave (ver análisis de la partida más abajo). Dos empates en las rondas finales fueron suficientes para mantener su ventaja y asegurarse el primer puesto en solitario.

Solo medio punto por detrás de Yoo terminaron el prodigio ucraniano Ihor Samunenkov y el gran maestro local Lorenzo Lodici, ambos con 7 puntos. En la ronda final, Samunenkov, de 15 años, derrotó al MI neerlandés Miguoel Admiraal para ascender en la clasificación. Lodici, de 25 años y representante de Italia, también puntuó en la ronda final al vencer al MI francés Loic Travadon. Ambos habían comenzado el último día de competición a un punto de distancia del líder, pero aprovecharon sus oportunidades para alcanzar el podio.
El triunfo de Yoo en Cerdeña es especialmente significativo dado el contexto de su carrera reciente. En octubre de 2024, durante el Campeonato de EE. UU. celebrado en el Club de Ajedrez de Saint Louis, estuvo involucrado en un incidente controvertido. Tras perder contra Fabiano Caruana en la quinta ronda, Yoo abandonó la sala de juego frustrado y, al hacerlo, golpeó por la espalda a una videógrafa.
