La gran tradición ajedrecística de la localidad costera inglesa de Hastings se remonta al año 1882. El 28 de junio de 1882 se celebró un congreso de ajedrez en el Hotel Albert Temperance de Hastings, durante el cual se fundó el Hastings and St. Leonards Chess Club. En los años siguientes, se organizaron conferencias anuales de ajedrez con maestros y, finalmente, en 1895, se organizó un gran torneo internacional. Tuvo un cartel fantástico y consolidó la fama de los torneos de Hastings: participaron el Campeón del Mundo Emanuel Lasker y su predecesor Wilhelm Steinitz, pero los dos campeones fueron superados por Harry Nelson Pillsbury, al igual que Siegbert Tarrasch y otros jugadores de talla mundial.
