19/06/2019 – World Chess había ideado un nuevo formato de torneo, apropiado para salir en la televisión rusa, la serie de torneos "World Chess Armageddon". Entre el 10 y el 16 de junio de 2019 se disputó el primer torneo. Se enfrentaron los ocho jugadores Vladimir Kramnik (Rusia), Teymur Radjabov (Azerbaiyán), Sergey Karjakin (Rusia), Ian Nepomniachtchi (Rusia), Daniil Dubov (Rusia), Ernesto Inarkiev (Rusia), Boris Gelfand (Israel) y Wei Yi (China). Finalmente se coronó campeón Sergey Karjakin al imponerse a Ian Nepomniachtchi en el duelo de la final.
