La atracción del día sin duda fue el duelo entre los dos líderes. Magnus Carlsen jugaba con blancas contra Hikaru Nakamura. Hasta ahora, Carlsen había conquistado muchas victorias contra Nakamura, y este último quería acabar de una vez con esa racha. El número uno de EE.UU. no solo se puso las gafas de sol y de ganar, sino también dejó ver sus ambiciones sobre el tablero. Optó por una India de Rey que pronto desembocó en el tipo de posiciones que le gustan: desiguales y tácticas. Pronto Carlsen tuvo que retirarse a la defensiva, pero fue capaz de alcanzar una posición en la que pudo sobrevivir. La partida concluyó en tablas.
Nakamura jugando con gafas de sol
Cuando le preguntaron por qué se había puesto gafas de sol dentro de la sala de juego, respondió que simplemente quería variar un poco y pasárselo bien, que en el ajedrez muchas cosas se toman demasiado en serio. Opinó que las gafas no le daban ningún tipo de ventaja psicológica, sino que simplemente quería hacer buenos movimientos.
Cuando le preguntaron a Carlsen qué tal le había parecido la partida, se río un poco. "Fue un buen lío, por así decirlo". El noruego opinaba que había sido una partida complicada en la cual no tenía el control absoluto de lo que estaba ocurriendo. Se llevó una sorpresa porque el estadounidense jugase con gafas de sol y comentó que si se acordaba bien, en alguna ocasión su oponente había dicho que le bastaba con hacer buenos movimientos para ganar y nada más.
El presidente del Club de Ajedrez de St. Louis y organizador del torneo, Tony Rich, realizó el movimiento de honor. Se puede adivinar que ambos tienen sus pensamientos particulares acerca de las gafas de sol de Nakamura.

La partida Kamsky-Aronian también fue muy interesante. Comenzó muy pasiva, con las blancas jugando c3 de manera temprana y las negras respondiendo con una apertura con efecto espejo. Pero tras poco tiempo resultó evidente que ambos jugadores se habían planteado buscar pelea. Aronian avanzó con todos sus peones del flanco del rey y consiguió un peligroso ataque, pero en los apuros de tiempo, no fue capaz de convertir la presión en una victoria y la partida desembocó en tablas.
