La primera partida que terminó fue el enfrentamiento entre Grischuk y Topalov que firmaron tablas tras una Najdorf. Grischuk tuvo la oportunidad de alcanzar una ligera ventaja con el sútil movimiento de The1 en un momento dado. Aunque al fin y al cabo habría conducido a la misma posición que luego surgió en la partida, eso le habría hecho ganar un tiempo adicional, pero dejó escapar dicha posibilidad y la partida concluyó en tablas.
Grischuk y Topalov empataron
La siguiente partida en terminar fue Giri vs. Carlsen. El Campeón del Mundo utilizó la Siciliana Sveshnikov, una variante no está de moda precisamente, pero que sí es lo suficientemente fuerte como para ser útil en muchas ocasiones. Giri no fue capaz de generarle presión alguna y nuevamente los alfiles de colores opuestos sacaron a relucir sus cabezas feas.

Caruana se vio confrontado con una bonita novedad planteada por Anand. El jugador indio igualó sin problemas. Sin embargo, más adelante tomó algunas decisiones estratégicamente raras que le pusieron en peligro. Caruana empujó pero no fue suficiente. La posición de las negras aguantó lo preciso para mantener el bloqueo. Caruana optó por algunas maniobras tácticas, pero la partida concluyó en tablas no obstante.

La partida del día sin duda fue la preciosa destrucción de Wesley So. El espectacular sacrificio del caballo de Levon Aronian resultó estar muy fundado. El bando blanco no había desarrollado bien sus piezas y esto selló el destino de la partida.
