La Benoni diferida de Morozevich permitió a Gelfand a conseguir una configuración de la que se sabe que es favorable para las blancas. Con el motivo de destrozar la ventaja y la buena estructura de sus piezas, el ruso sacrificó una calidad, pero es poco probable que haya sido recompensado por completo en esta variante. Gelfand devolvió el material para obtener un fuerte peón pasado en el centro y terminó la partida con una serie de movimientos muy precisamente calculados que provocaron una coronación y le permitieron ganar la partida.

Carlsen obtuvo una cómoda ventaja después de la apertura. La verdad es que más ventaja de lo que se merecía, teniendo en cuenta la variante por la que optó. No parece un preludio favorable para el duelo por el título mundial entre Carlsen y Anand, de este mismo año.

Es un placer ver la buena preparación de Andreikin por este torneo. No ha tenido problemas alguno con las aperturas y no ha permitido a nadie, obtener una posición mejor que la suya o hasta jugable contra él. Por otra parte, parece que está careciendo en ambición, pues va firmando unas tablas tras otras. Nakamura definitivamente se sentía incómodo tras la apertura y sobre la posición final es difícil decir si Andreikin realmente tenía alguna ventaja, pero en todo caso estaba en el bando con las mejores posibilidades y podría haber seguido jugando, aunque fuesen unos pocos movimientos más.
Kramnik, Vladimir - Karjakin, Sergey ½-½
La Dragón invertida suele dar buenas posibilidades a las negras para igualar. En la partida de la quinta ronda, Karjakin se aprovechó de todas esas oportunidades y después de que hubiesen cambiado las damas, la posición de las blancas era ligeramente favorable. Pero tras el cambio de más piezas, las tablas se convirtieron en un hecho.
Mamedyarov, Shakhriyar - Caruana, Fabiano ½-½
Si las blancas se abren paso hacia el centro con e4 en las posiciones supersólidas de la Schlecter, el peón d4 resulta ser un gran compromiso. A pesar de tener más espacio y también una pareja de alfiles, este peón normalmente suele evitar que las blancas puedan jugar cosa activa alguna. En esta partida, Mamedyarov fue capaz de empujar el peón hasta d7, pero se quedó aislado del resto de las piezas blancas y su única cuerda de salvación era el alfil en h3. Tras el cambio de varias piezas, los jugadores acordaron las tablas en una posición que habría terminado en un final de alfiles de colores opuestos.
