Durante muchos años, la Najdorf pasaba por ser la mejor respuesta para las negras a 1.e4. Dicho eso, en Wijk aan Zee en esta ocasión la Najdorf sufrió unos cuantos "golpes bajos".

En la ronda 12, Anish Giri jugó contra Alireza Firouzja, quien también había tenido posibilidades de ganar el torneo. Una complicada Defensa Francesa condujo a un final en la cual Firouzja tenía un caballo de ventaja y tenía que lucha contra cuatro peones blancos muy peligrosos. Al final, el mejor jugador juvenil del mundo, Firouzja, logró mantener las tablas en este final de partida.
En la ronda 11, Alireza Firouzja y Fabiano Caruana jugaron una partida Italiana muy agresiva. Primero Caruana se dejó escapar una buena oportunidad. Y más adelante, Firouzja podría haber ganado. Pero...
En la ronda 10, Caruana planteó un concepto totalmente nuevo para la línea principal de las negras, de la Defensa India de Rey. El enfoque poco habitual de Caruana condujo a una victoria convincente y brillante.
