Nodirbek Yakubboev saltó a los titulares el año pasado al ganar el Qatar Masters tras superar a jugadores de la talla de Magnus Carlsen, Hikaru Nakamura y Anish Giri. El gran maestro uzbeko es ahora el único líder de una liguilla a una sola vuelta de 10 jugadores en la que participan 8 jugadores con una puntuación igual o superior a 2700. De hecho, este joven de 22 años es el jugador con la puntuación más baja.
En las 5 primeras rondas del torneo de Tashkent, Yakubboev firmó tablas en las 3 partidas que jugó con negras y ganó las 2 que jugó con blancas. Sus victorias sobre Vidit Gujrathi (en la ronda 2) y sobre Parham Maghsoodloo (en la ronda 4) fueron sendas batallas tácticas en las que el rey de Yakubboev tuvo que sobrevivir desde una posición vulnerable.
Empatados en el segundo puesto, a medio punto de Yakubboev, se encuentran los cabezas de serie Nodirbek Abdusattorov, Yu Yangyi y Javokhir Sindarov. Sindarov, el único jugador, aparte de Yakubboev, clasificado por debajo de 2700, derrotó a Abdusattorov en la cuarta ronda. Abdusattorov, por su parte, derrotó a Maghsoodloo y Alexander Grischuk para pasar a la segunda mitad del evento con una puntuación de +1.
Las rondas 6-9 tendrán lugar de martes a viernes, y el líder en solitario aún deberá enfrentarse a dos de sus perseguidores más cercanos, Yu y Sindarov.
