Ken Thompson recibió el Premio Japón, en California
El Premio Japón consiste en un certificado, una medalla conmemorativa y un premio en efectivo de 50 millones de
yenes (alrededor de 600.000
dólares) Es el galardón más prestigioso de Japón, al que muchas veces se hace
referencia como "Premio Nobel de Asia". Se entrega por hazañas extraordinarias y originales en las
ciencias y la tecnología. Este año, el galardonado fue para unos científicos estadounidenses, que hace 40 años crearon el sistema operativo Unix y el
lenguaje de programación C. Uno de ellos es el que también es un pionero del ajedrez informático, Ken Thompson.
Ken iba a recibir el galardón el pasado mes de abril, con presencia del
emperador y del gobierno en pleno de Japón. Desafortunadamente, el terremoto de Tōhoku y el tsunami lo hicieron imposible y por esa razón, la ceremonia se llevó a cabo el 17 de mayo de 2011 y el premio le fue entregado por una delegación japonesa en la sede principal de Google, en Mountain View
(California) La ceremonia fue filmada y los vídeos han sido publicados en YouTube.
Tras una introducción muy interesante a cargo del vicepresidente de Google,
Vinton Cerf, quien ha sido el director de la compañía "Internet Evangelist" desde septiembre de 2005 (A Vint se
le considera uno de los padres de Internet), hay una sección de su discurso (desde el minuto 5 y 20 segundos hasta el minuto 13) en
la que habla de las carreras de Dennis Richie y Ken Thompson. Pueden ver el extracto
concreto en el tercer vídeo, más abajo.
Tras 13 minutos y 30 segundos en el vídeo, el presidente del Premio Japón,
profesor Hiroyuki Yoshikawa, habla del terremoto y del tsunami que golpeó su país y sobre por qué Ken Thompson y Dennis Richie han sido galardonados este año. A continuación, le ruega a Ken dirigir la palabra al público. Esa parte comienza en el minuto 26 y 30 segundos del vídeo. Si
ustedes reproducen el siguiente vídeo, saltará automáticamente a
un momento brillante en el que Ken cuenta su famosa historia del caimán.
