Karpov llamó a Wolfgang Unzicker el “campeón del mundo de los aficionados”. Nació en Pirmasens (Alemania) el 26 de junio de 1925 y comenzó a jugar al ajedrez a los 10 años. La carrera de Unzicker como jugador de torneos internacionales comenzó tras la II Guerra Mundial. Ganó el Campeonato de Alemania siete veces, entre 1948 y 1965 y tomó parte en doce Olimpiadas de Ajedrez entre 1950 y 1978 (En 10 de ellas, ocupó el primer tablero) En 1954 fue recompensado con el título de Gran Maestro. Representó a su país con la selección nacional cerca de 400 veces. Wolfgang Unzicker murió de un ataque al corazón el 20 de abril de 2006 durante unas vacaciones en Albufeira (Portugal) Deja a su mujer Freia, tres hijos y tres nietos. Hasta su fallecimiento, siguió jugando en el tablero uno de su club, el "Tarrasch Munich".

En 1939 ya era una destacada promesa del ajedrez alemán.

Mundial en las colinas de Harburg (cerca de Hamburgo) y la joven de 17 años
Edith Keller.

Wolfgang Unzicker vs Max Euwe en la Olimpiada de 1950 en Dubrovnik. Los
observadores son Vincenzo Castaldi y Lothar Schmid.
En dicha Olimpiada Unzicker compartió el premio al mejor primer tablero con Miguel Najdorf (+9 =4 -1)
