La Copa del Mundo de la FIDE, un tradicional torneo bienal, se celebra del 1 al 26 de noviembre en el Resort Rio, en Goa, India.
Todos los enfrentamientos constan de dos partidas clásicas con un control de tiempo de 90 minutos para 40 jugadas, más 30 minutos hasta el final de la partida, y un incremento de 30 segundos por jugada desde el primer movimiento.
En caso de empate, se disputa un desempate en el tercer día de la ronda. El desempate consiste en dos partidas rápidas de 15+10, seguidas, si es necesario, de dos partidas de "blitz lento" de 10+10 y luego dos partidas de blitz de 5+3. Si el marcador sigue igualado, se jugará una partida a muerte súbita, según las siguientes reglas:
Las blancas tendrán 4 minutos + 2 segundos de incremento por jugada desde el primer movimiento.
Ambos jugadores deberán presentar una oferta de tiempo, especificando con cuántos minutos iniciales están dispuestos a jugar con negras (también con un incremento de 2 segundos por jugada desde el primer movimiento). Una oferta no puede superar los 4 minutos. El jugador que haga la oferta más baja gana la puja y juega con negras. Si ambos jugadores hacen exactamente la misma oferta, las negras comienzan con ese tiempo y un sorteo determinará los colores.
Si la partida a muerte súbita termina en tablas, el jugador con negras ganará el enfrentamiento.
