03/10/2024 – El ajedrez latinoamericano perdió a uno de sus referentes más importantes con el fallecimiento del Gran Maestro paraguayo Zenón Franco este 1 de octubre en Vigo, España, a los 68 años. Con una destacada trayectoria como jugador, autor y entrenador, Franco dejó una huella profunda en el mundo del ajedrez. Representó a Paraguay y España en 11 Olimpiadas de Ajedrez y publicó 40 libros sobre el juego. Además, fue reconocido por su labor como columnista y formador de nuevos talentos, consolidando un legado que perdurará en el tiempo.

Una leyenda del ajedrez latinoamericano
Este martes, 1 de octubre, falleció el Gran Maestro paraguayo Zenón Franco en Vigo, España, a los 68 años. Tras sufrir un paro cardiaco hace 12 días, su estado de salud se deterioró hasta su fallecimiento. Su primo, Ezequiel Gómez, informó al diario ABC Color que, junto a la esposa de Zenón, están considerando la posibilidad de repatriar sus restos a Paraguay, su país natal.
Zenón Franco nació el 12 de mayo de 1956 en Asunción, Paraguay. En 1990, recibió el título de Gran Maestro, convirtiéndose en el único GM paraguayo hasta que Axel Bachmann obtuviera dicho título en 2007. Durante muchos años, Franco vivió en Buenos Aires, Argentina, antes de mudarse a España en la década de los 90, donde residió hasta su muerte.
A lo largo de su carrera, participó en 11 Olimpiadas de Ajedrez, comenzando en Haifa en 1976 y culminando en Batumi en 2018. En 1998, representó a España en la Olimpiada de Kalmukia, Rusia. Ganó medallas de oro por su desempeño individual en el primer tablero en las ediciones de Lucerna 1982 y Novi Sad 1990, ambas representando a Paraguay. En 1981, conquistó el Campeonato Panamericano en Jujuy, Argentina. Alcanzó el puesto 66 en el ranking oficial de la FIDE en enero de 1982.
Franco no solo fue un referente en el ámbito competitivo, sino también como autor. Publicó 40 libros en español, inglés, italiano y ruso. Muchos de sus títulos en inglés fueron distribuidos por la editorial Gambit. Sus últimos títulos en español fueron publicados bajo su propia editorial, ZenonChess Ediciones. En 2021, su libro Miguel Najdorf – El Viejo – Life, Games & Stories fue finalista en los Premios Averbakh-Boleslavsky de la FIDE, que premian a los mejores libros de ajedrez del año.
Además de su trabajo como autor, Zenón Franco fue un prolífico columnista. Escribió para numerosas revistas especializadas en Argentina, Italia y España, y publicó más de 700 columnas en el diario paraguayo ABC Color. Su última columna, la número 724, fue publicada el 18 de septiembre. Desde julio de 2022, algunos fragmentos de sus columnas fueron publicados en nuestra web de noticias.
Franco, además, fue reconocido por su labor como entrenador. Como FIDE Senior Trainer, ayudó en la formación de jugadores destacados como Francisco Vallejo Pons y David Martínez, este último también conocido por su papel como capitán de las selecciones españolas de ajedrez. Su legado como jugador, autor y formador permanecerá como una de las grandes contribuciones al ajedrez latinoamericano.
