de batalla y eso siempre es bueno para los espectadores.
Anand pudo haber tenido un poquito de suerte, ya que su apertura estuvo lejos de

– 40 jugadas en 120 minutos más
– 20 jugadas en 60 minutos más
– 15 minutos para el resto de la partida, con 30 segundos por jugada a
partir de la 61.
En caso de tablas antes de la jugada 40, se disputará una partida de
ajedrez rápido, pero no contará para el resultado global.

La Catalana de Gelfand tuvo bastante más éxito esta vez, ya que logró una
presión algo más fuerte sobre el flanco de dama, especialmente sobre el
sobreavanzado peón de c4 de Anand. Es un poco misterioso porqué cedió tan
contento la calidad por dos peones, cuando el ataque directo sobre los peones
con un potencial Cd2 podía haberle hecho pescar ese peón de c4 sin problemas.
Las simplificaciones que siguieron al sacrificio de calidad permitieron el
suficiente contrajuego a Anand para entablar cómodamente.
Al haber tenido algunas opciones de victoria tras una mala Benoni contra Caruana
anteriromente en el torneo, Kramnik se imaginó que tendría incluso más opciones
de victoria si tuviera un tiempo de ventaja con esa apertura. La configuración
con la Benoni invertida le funcionó bastante bien ya que fue capaz de generar
problemas en el flanco de dama e incluso de comenzar a avanzar algunos peones
del flanco de rey en un intento de atacar. Sin embargo, Caruana sacrificó la
calidad por dos peones para empujarlo hacia atrás y lentamente empezó a superar
al ruso. Cuando todo parecía sombrío para Kramnik, encontró la sorprendente 45.
Te4!! sencillamente dejando su torre amenazada. Lamentablemente para Caruana, su
captura significaba permitir un poco habitual jaque continuo y aunque se
podía discutir que podía haber retirado su dama en vez de eso, sintió que era
demasiado arriesgado y aceptó las tablas. ¡Una partida salvaje y emocionante!
