La competición había comenzado tranquila. La fase clásica de la Copa Sinquefield comenzó con algunas pequeñas sorpresas, entre ellas el hecho de que el joven jugador estadounidense Hans Niemann había recibido una invitación tras que Richard Rapport no pudiera acudir debido a complicaciones relacionadas con la covid-19.
[...] En la tercera ronda llegó el encuentro entre Magnus Carlsen y Hans Niemann. Los espectadores se frotaban las manos y tenían mucha curiosidad a ver lo que iba a pasar en esta partida. Niemann obviamente estaba emocionado por enfrentarse con el que siempre había sido su héroe.
[Tras perder la partida de la tercera ronda contra Niemann se informó que] Magnus Carlsen se había retirado del torneo, habiendo informado a los organizadores, y tras haber publicado un tuit provocativo y críptico.
Este hecho extrañísimo —Carlsen nunca se había retirado de un torneo antes— provocó todo tipo de especulaciones. Parece bastante claro que lo hizo porque consideró que su joven rival había hecho trampa.
Mientras el mundo del ajedrez se batía en discusiones en redes sociales, el gran maestro Miguel Illescas se dedicó a investigar las jugadas de la partida.
