En la fase del mediojuego, Valentina Gunina avanzó con sus peones del flanco del rey. Anna Zatonskih jugó de manera un poco encogida y no sabía muy bien como afrontar aquello cuando comenzó la batalla por el centro. Las blancas no pudieron evitar perder la calidad en la siguiente secuencia:
Después de que las negras capturasen con 25…♞xd4, las alternativas que le quedaban a Anna Zatonskih no parecían muy alentdoras. Si capturase con el peón su posición llegaría a ser demasiado vulnerable contra el avance de f4. Pero al capturar con la torre, perdería la calidad a la fuerza. Optó por esa última opción y llegó a tener una desventaja de material tras 26.♖xd4 ♝e5 27.♘xe4 ♝xd4. No es posible salvar la calidad en el movimiento 27 debido a la debilidd en c3 dado que las negras podräían clavar el caballo con las torres de c7 y c8.
Zatonskih aún consiguió plantear algunas amenazas que le complicaron un poco al vida a Gunina. Aún así la desventaja de material de las blancas le rompió el cuello cuanod llegaron a la faes final de la partida:
