Mientras Magnus Carlsen, campeón del mundo clásico entre 2013 y 2023, se ha mantenido activo en el circuito de ajedrez de élite (últimamente sobre todo en los torneos de ajedrez rápido y relámpago), el actual Campeón del Mundo de Ajedrez, Ding Liren, no había participado en ningún torneo oficial durante el segundo semestre de 2023. Se trataba de un torneo por sistema eliminatorio, en el que participaron grandes maestros chinos. Bautizada como la "China Chess King Competition", la ganó Yu Yangyi, de 29 años, que derrotó a Wang Hao en la final (Wang había derrotado a Ding en semifinales). En la partida por el tercer puesto, Ding perdió contra su buen amigo Wei Yi.
Con respecto a la ausencia en los torneos de ajedrez clásico durante los últimos meses, Ding Liren le explicó a Peter Doggers de Chess.com que había tenido problemas de salud mental tras su victoria contra Ian Nepomniachtchi en el Campeonato del Mundo.
Han sido problemas psicológicas, no físicas. Ahora puedo decir que me encuentro mucho mejor que hace dos o tres meses. [...] Sentía mucha presión desde todos los lados. Pero este solo es un lado de la historia. La cosa está más complicada, pero no puedo explicarlo con más detalle.
Durante el el duelo en Astaná, el jugador de 31 años mostró su lado más sensible, dando a menudo respuestas profundas en las ruedas de prensa posteriores a las partidas (que en otros torneos habían resultado bastante más monótonas). Tras ganar el título, Ding confesó:
A veces estoy luchando para encontrar algún pasatiempo que sirve para hacerme feliz. Pero he procurado aprender de los mejores [chess players] jugadores de ajedrez. El duelo refleja lo más hondo de mi alma.
