28/06/2016 – Samuel es el vencedor del abierto de la ciudad canadiense. Hasta la ronda 8, parecía que Surya Ganguly se iba a alzar con la victoria, porque había ganado 7 partidas consecutivas. Entonces cayó a manos de su más cercano perseguidor, Samual Shankland. Una victoria frente a Shirov en la ronda final le garantizó la victoria del torneo, 8/9 puntos y mejor valoración de desempate.
