Nakamura vs Aronian y Carlsen vs Grischuk
Tras un fantástico arranque, seguido por dos inesperadas derrotas, Topalov se presentó a la partida contra Giri con muy poco espíritu de lucha. No se le puede tomar a mal; es difícil recuperar los ánimos si las cosas van muy bien y luego muy mal y seguir jugando con el mismo entusiasmo porque siempre es una situación psicológicamente complicada. Por eso optó por una variante segura de la vieja anti-Gruenfeld. La partida concluyó en tablas tras un final seco.

Caruana decidió plantear otra Siciliana con Ab5+ en este torneo. La partida rápidamente se convirió en una posición con aspecto de Española. Se veían los conceptos usuales estratégicos de la Española Cerrada, incluyendo la presión por ambos flancos del tablero y una ligera ventaja de espacio en el centro relativamente importante. Pero al igual que en las partidas Españolas, la posición de las negras simplemente era demasiado sólida. Caruana fue incapaz de crear peligro alguno y cuando todas las piezas pesadas fueron desalojados del tablero, se firmaron las paces.

Anand pronto se metió en problemas durante la apertura contra Wesley So. La estrella india mencionó que "debía haber hecho algo estúpido" durante la apertura por haber obtenido una posición tan desastrosa, pero no sabía indicar el punto exacto en el que había sido. No obstante, luego fue muy imaginativo a la hora de encontrar soluciones. Sacrificó una dama por una torre y un alfil y después de que hubiese perdido un peón para obtener una situación en la cual el rey negro iba a estar en apuros, los peones de So resultaron débiles y no conseguían avanzar. Anand se aprovechó de eso y creó una fortaleza estable, asegurándose así las tablas sin problema.

Aronian estaría bastante contento con la preparación un tanto rara de Nakamura. Un poco como en la partida de la sexta ronda, que Nakamura ganó contra Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, el jugador de las piezas blancas (en la séptima ronda fue Nakamura) jugó de manera veloz pero obtuvo una posición dudosa. Aronian demostró una excelente capacidad de evaluación a la hora de colocar sus piezas en las casillas idóneas mientras que Nakamura no tanto. Un error decisivo en el movimiento 40 por parte de Nakamura brindó a Aronian la oportunidad de abrirse paso y triunfar.

La partida de Carlsen fue un tanto rara. No le gustaba la posición que había surgido tras la apertura, pero en un momento dado parecía claro que la partida iba a desembocar en unas tablas. El final con peones igualados y alfiles de colores opuestos parecía sellar el trato. Sin embargo, el Campeón del Mundo corrió riesgos y perdió un peón. Grischuk se dedicó a torturar a Carlsen durante mucho tiempo hasta que finalmente Carlsen cometió un error y perdió la partida, tras consumir casi todo el tiempo disponible.
