El Chesstival comienza con un torneo de «Hand and Brain». En esta variante del ajedrez, un jugador anuncia qué pieza debe moverse —peón, caballo, alfil, torre, dama o rey— y su compañero (esta variante presenta dos jugadores por bando) realiza una jugada con esa pieza. En este torneo, los mejores ajedrecistas del mundo formarán duplas con estrellas del baloncesto. Luego seguirá un torneo individual, en el que los jugadores de baloncesto competirán entre sí.

Una de las fuerzas impulsoras detrás del Chesstival es la leyenda de la NBA Derrick Rose.
