En la primera partida de los octavos de final, Caruana, Topalov, Adams y Wei Yi habían perdido contra Mamedyarov, Svidler, Nakamura y Ding Liren con lo cual en la segunda tenían que ganar para optar a los desempates. El único que lo logró fue Wei Yi.

Fabiano Caruana tenía que ganar contra Shakhriyar Mamedyarov y al menos tenía la ventaja de jugar con blancas. Mamedyarov optó por una variante abierta de la Española y mantuvo el equilibrio durante todo el tiempo. Al final la partida concluyó en tablas tras jaque continuo. Al haber perdido la primera partida, Caruana por lo tanto ha sido eliminado.

La partida entre Hikaru Nakamura y Michael Adams tomó un rumbo parecido. Nakamura había ganado la primera partida y Adams habría tenido que imponerse en la segunda para igualar el marcador y pasar a los desempates. Pero Nakamura logró igualar la partida y eliminó a Adams.

Svidler igualmente había ganado la primera partida contra Topalov y tuvo que defender su ventaja jugando con negras. En una variante cerrada de la clásica partida Española, el búlgaro al final cometió un error y ofreció las tablas inmediatamente. Svidler aceptó y Topalov queda eliminado.
El único jugador que logró igualar su derrota en la última partida fue el joven talento chino Wei Yi. Ganó con blancas contra su compatriota Ding Liren. Hoy se volverán a ver las caras en las partidas de desempate de los octavos de final.
La primera partida entre Maxime Vachier-Lagrave y Wesley So había concluido en tablas. Pero en la segunda, el francés se apuntó la victoria y eliminó a So. Habían cambiado las damas en un momento temprano de la partida y Vachier-Lagrave ganó una pieza en un rifirrafe táctico. El resto era cuestión de jugar con buena técnica, aunque requirió su tiempo la victoria de Vachier-Lagrave.
