Aronian gana el Masters, Suleymanli se queda con el segundo puesto
Era uno de los poquísimos ajedrecistas de la élite mundial que nunca antes había competido en el Festival de Ajedrez de Biel, y ahora ha triunfado en su primer intento: Levon Aronian. Aronian se mostró muy sólido en el ajedrez clásico, con tablas en sus ocho partidas lentas. Sumado a sus destacadas actuaciones en rápidas (9/10 puntos) y blitz (8½/10 puntos), terminó con un total de 29½ puntos.
Con su victoria en Biel, Levon Aronian —gran maestro nacido en Armenia, de 43 años, que representa a Estados Unidos desde 2021— añade otro título a su impresionante lista de logros. Quien llegó a ser número dos del mundo, alcanzó en 2014 el cuarto rating Elo más alto de todos los tiempos, con 2830. Lleva ya más de 20 años compitiendo al máximo nivel internacional. Aronian ha sido un ganador más que digno en la edición de 2026 del festival en Biel.
Si Suleymanli hubiera ganado la partida de la última ronda, se habría quedado con el título del torneo, pues habría igualado en puntos a Aronian y lo habría superado gracias a su mejor actuación en el torneo ACCENTUS Chess960. Sin embargo, el segundo puesto sigue siendo un gran éxito para él, dado que, según su Elo, solo era el quinto preclasificado entre los seis jugadores. Es más, Suleymanli fue convocado con poca antelación para reemplazar a Nodirbek Yakubboev, quien no pudo participar, y por ello no pudo prepararse para el torneo con tanta profundidad como sus rivales.

Finek triunfa en el Generations Challenge
Vaclav Finek dominó de principio a fin la sección Generations Challenge. Tomó la delantera el primer día, en la disciplina de rápidas, y nunca la soltó. Detrás en la clasificación estaba Xiao Tong, contra quien todavía debía defender su ventaja en la última jornada de acción. Como en el Masters, el perseguidor más cercano necesitaba una victoria para alcanzar al líder. Pero Xiao solo pudo hacer tablas, lo que significó que Finek —a los 16 años, el más joven participante en la Generations Challenge— se quedó con la victoria.
Finek demostró un gran rendimiento en las tres disciplinas del triatlón: terminó primero en las clásicas y en las rápidas, y quedó apenas medio punto por detrás de Xiao —el mejor en esta disciplina— en blitz. La joven promesa checa aún no ha recibido el título de gran maestro y por ahora sigue figurando como maestro internacional, aunque probablemente muy pronto podrá llevar las siglas GM delante de su nombre.
Xiao terminó en segundo lugar por detrás de Finek. El joven jugador chino ya había competido en el torneo Masters Open de Biel dos años antes, con 15 años. En su regreso, firmó una sólida actuación y demostró estar a la altura de su condición de jugador con mayor Elo del grupo. Por detrás de él, Marco Materia completó el podio. Materia también ha competido tres veces en el Biel Masters Open y ahora tuvo la oportunidad de demostrar su valía en el escenario principal.

MTO: Kozak y Cao cierran con victorias
Christian Gloeckler se aseguró la victoria en el Masters Open con una ronda de antelación. El jugador de 14 años perdió su partida de la última ronda con negras contra Adam Kozak y cerró el evento con una performance de 2597. Kozak terminó así empatado en el segundo lugar con Cao Qingfeng, de China, quien también sumó una victoria en la última ronda: Cao derrotó a Peter Acs con negras.
Seis jugadores terminaron medio punto por detrás de Kozak y Cao, con 7/10. Este grupo incluyó a la joven promesa india de 19 años Savitha Shri, quien, de forma notable, fue la mejor mujer en el fuerte grupo de 94 jugadores.

14/12/2025 – Levon Aronian ganó las Finales del Grand Slam de Ajedrez Freestyle en Sudáfrica tras derrotar a Magnus Carlsen por 1½–½. Aronian, por lo tanto, se llevó el primer premio del evento, dotado con 200.000 dólares. La final puso fin a la competición de cuatro días. Vincent Keymer se quedó con el tercer puesto tras vencer a Javokhir Sindarov.
