En la octava ronda, Hou Yifan jugaba con negras contra Rafael Vaganian. El ex candidato del circuito mundial y jugador de elite en sus tiempos al parecer había echado un vistazo a la base de datos y habría encontrado dos partidas victoriosas que Vladimir Kramnik había jugado contra la mejor jugadora del mundo en Medias en otoño del año pasado. El gran maestro armenio al menos quiso hacer un intento:

Alexander Morozevich ha tenido sus momentos buenos y malos a lo largo del torneo. Ayer se impuso a Noel Studer, quien no ha logrado estar a la altura por completo en el torneo de Biel.
El otro jugador suizo sí que ha podido competir bastante bien. Nico Georgiadis ayer jugaba con blancas contra Peter Leko y empató.
La partida más larga de la octava ronda fue la que disputaron Ruslan Ponomariov y Pentala Hariskrishna.

Ponomariov continuó luchando durante mucho tiempo para, por lo menos, mantener las tablas, pero sus empeños no fueron exitosos.
