Palermo, la capital siciliana, llamada "Reino del sol" por los invasores normandos en el siglo XII, ha sido un crisol cultural desde que fenicios y griegos lucharon por ella en los siglos V y VI a.C. Situada cerca de donde acaba Europa y empieza África, Palermo lleva las cicatrices -y los ecos de las glorias- de siglos de dominación. Romana, bizantina, árabe, normanda y, en última instancia, italiana (unificada con el continente en 1861), su identidad "made in Italy" es relativamente reciente. Y en 2018 lució el estandarte de Capital Italiana de la Cultura, acogiendo la prestigiosa bienal de arte contemporáneo Manifesta y ayudando a regenerar su paseo marítimo.
Palermo se enorgullece de sus orígenes árabes, que se remontan al siglo VIII, y sus tres mercados principales, Capo, Vucciria y Ballarò, recuerdan a los zocos árabes. La abundancia y variedad de alimentos, y sus vendedores teatrales, confieren a los mercados palermitanos una actitud distintiva. Recorrerlos puede ser un poco desalentador, así que pruebe un tour de comida callejera con Streaty.
