Jóvenes y valientes
El Campeonato Juvenil de EE.UU. es la competición más prestigiosa para la cantera americana sub-21. La bolsa de premios asciende a 20.600 dólares estadounidenses. El ritmo de juego es 90 minutos por 40 movimientos, seguido por 30 minutos para el resto de la partida, más 30 segundos de incremento a partir del primer movimiento.

Awonder Liang, es el segundo favorito según su valoración Elo. La posición siguiente surgió tras el movimiento 17 en su partida con negras frente a Mika Brattain en la quinta ronda:
Brattain jugó 18.Th5 en lugar de 18.h7+. Para poder darse cuenta que sería mejor darle jaque primero al rey, Mika trendría que haber calculado la siguiente variante larga con gran precisión: 18.h7+ Rf8 19.Da3 Dc7 20.Cc5 Ad5 21.Th5 (véase el diagrama).

Aquí las negras tendrían que encontrar el movimiento 21...f6 para poder plantear cierta resistencia. Es que trás algún tipo de movimiento "más natural", por ejemplo, 21...Cc6, las blancas pueden comerse el peón con 22.Txg5, porque las negras no pueden jugar 22...Dxg5 por Cxe6 #:
