Uno de los protagonistas de ese espectáculo a partidas rápidas y relámpago con posición inicial aleatoria, es el ex campeón del mundo Garry Kasparov. Al final, Kasparov perdió las últimas tres partidas contra su oponente,Fabiano Caruana. Levon Aronian y Peter Svidler tomaron en mando en sus duelos contra Hikaru Nakamura y Leinier Domínguez, respectivamente.
