Uno podría llegar a pensar que la partida de ajedrez entre Lily Cole y Magnus Carlsen, escenificada para la campaña publicitaria 2014 de G-Star, solo es ilusión. Sin embargo, Lily Cole sí vinculación con el juego. G-Star se fijó en la modelo para la campaña, cuando vieron fotos de Cole jugando una partida amistosa contra Topalov.
Y durante sus estudios de historia del arte en Cambrigde, Lily Cole también entró en contacto con el ajedrez. "Escribí mi tesis sobre el artista mexicano Gabriel Orozco quien estudió el ajedrez de manera intensa. Siempre vuelve a poner el enlace con Duchampo de manera indirecta. Ambos artistas miraban el ajedrez desde un punto de vista filosófico y lo veían como metáfora de la propia vida. Es un juego que a la vez tiene elementos de la decisión libre y del determinismo, es decir de independencia y causalidad".
Pero Cole admite que la partida contra Carlsen fue fingida. "Ya me gustaría poder decir que he jugado de manera seria contra Magnus, pero no es el caso. Me encanta jugar al ajedrez con mis amigos pero, por supuesto, a otro nivel de juego".
En todo caso tampoco les tiene demasiado respeto a los ajedrecistas. Cuando se enteró de la opinión del ex campeón del mundo Garry Kasparov, diciendo que las mujeres no son jugadores excelentes por naturaleza, porque carecen de espíritu de lucha, Lily respondió: "Guau, es interesante eso. Ya me están entrando las ganas de convertirme en una jugadora de ajedrez realmente buena. ¿Cómo puede pensar semejante cosa? ¡Si las mujeres son unas luchadoras tremendas!".
