El amor por la madera
El documental está grabado en holandés, pero se pueden agregar subtítulos en inglés. Y para aquellos que no dominan ninguno de los dos idiomas con soltura, en todo caso les resultará curioso ver a esos viejos conocidos, pero unos cuantos añitos atrás.

Muchas veces, en los documentales de ajedrez se suelen evitar las discusiones sobre aspectos técnicos que podrían dejar fuera de juego a los legos; en este caso el público tiene que ser lo suficientemente experto para poder seguir lo que se comenta sobre las aperturas y su preparación, la psicología del jugador (¿Son todos unos sádicos en el fondo de sus almas?), la adicción al ajedrez y muchas cuestiones más.

Jan Timman cuando tenía unos veintitantos años
Los protagonistas principales son las estrellas de aquellos tiempos: Jan Timman, Jan Hein Donner, Hans Ree, Ulf Andersson, e incluso Max Euwe.
Jan Donner: "En el instante que estás tocando la pieza, verás más cosas de las que has visto durante los últimos 30 minutos de haber estudiado y evaluado la posición".
Timman explicando que se encuentra en medio de una preparación de aperturas y para este fin ha amontonado un montón de boletines y publicaciones para ordenarlos y llevárselos de viaje a los próximos torneos.
¿Somos unos sádicos? Hans Ree comentando que en el fondo de su alma, todos los ajedrecistas tienen cierto grado de sadismo, aunque sin ser violentos.
Timman intentó protestar, pero no recibió ayuda de parte de Ulf Andersson, quien admitió que a veces había deseado que su oponente no se rindiese demasiado de prisa, para que pudiera seguir disfrutando un rato más con su agonía.
