Duelo Karpov vs. Sveshnikov

El XII campeón del mundo, Anatoly Karpov
Evgeny Sveshnikov, quien ha sido dos veces campeón de Letonia, ha dejado su signatura de manera duradera en aquellas variantes de la Siciliana que llevan su nombre. Ha sido gracias a las investigaciones teóricas de Sveshnikov y el éxito de sus variantes contra los jugadores de la elite mundial, que se ha convertido en una de las más populares y exitosas líneas contra 1.e4. Ha escrito también varios libros al respecto y también ha contribuido de manera significativa a la Siliciana Alapin 1.e4 c5 2.c3, conviertiéndolo de una idea obscura a uno de las armas principales en las líneas importanetes de la Siciliana para las blancas.

El lugar del encuentro fue el complejo de apartamentos Residencia Tal, que lleva el nombre por una parte para dar tributo al jugador más famoso de Letonia, pero también porque "el arquitecta Ingurds Lazdins ha utilizado motivos de ajedrez para el diseño de la fachada dle edificio", tal y como se explica en la página web del proyecto.

Karpov pasaba por ser el favorito, pero no pudo alzarse con la victoria del tornoe, sin que Sveshnikov también le diese una lección, ocurrido así en la segunda partida.
