Entrarán en el salón de la fama cinco excepcionales ajedrecístas.
Los representativos de la Federación Internacional de Ajedrez (FIDE) han seleccionado a David Bronstein, Sonja Graf Stevensony Howard Staunton para entrar como nuevos miembros del salón de la fama. Se encontrarán en buena compañía con los 24 jugadores que ya están allí desde que el "Salón de la Fama" se creó en 2001. Los miembros elegidos para entrar en ese olimpo se seleccionan por su entrega total al deporte. Pueden ser tanto jugadores como personajes que hayan tenido mucho impacto en el mundo del ajedrez como, por ejemplo, autores, periodistas, organizadores, etc.
“Los que se agregarán este año, han destacado tanto por su elevado nivel de juego como por su contribución general al ajedrez", comentó la vicepresidenta de la FIDE Beatriz Marinello.
Los candidatos que entrarán en el salón este año serán los grandes maestros Maurice Ashley y Gata Kamsky, apuntándose a los otros 55 jugadores actualmente incluidos en el Salón de la Fama de EE.UU.
“Tanto Ashley como Kamsky han tenido un impacto tremendo en el mundo del ajedrez. Ambos son jugadores extraordinariamente comprometidos. Ashley ha ampliado la visibilidad del ajedrez entre el grupo clave de espectadores y Kamsky ha demostrado la habilidad única de mantener el calibre y la fuerza de juego durante más de tres décadas. Nos hace mucha ilusión poder homenajar a esos jugadores de elite", comentó Harold Winston, director del U.S. Chess Trust.
El "Salón de la Fama del Ajedrez de EE.UU." fue fundado en 1986 por la federación estadounidense y al comienzo se llamaba "US Chess Hall of Fame", ubicada en un pequeño salón de exposiciones en el sótano del edificio de la federación en Nueva York. Entre 2001 y 2006 la institución se situó en Miami y desde el año 2011, San Luis es la sede oficial.
