Cheparínov fue un niño prodigio que se hizo famoso, principalmente, por ser el analista más importante de quien fue campeón del mundo, Véselin Topálov, durante muchos años. Además de sus éxitos individuales, es un jugador muy apreciado por organizadores y aficionados por su estilo creativo, propicio al riesgo. Emparejado con la excampeona del mundo Antoaneta Stefánova, también búlgara, Cheparínov se afilió a la Federación Georgiana en 2018, cuando la Federación Internacional (FIDE) ofreció a todos los jugadores búlgaros que pudiesen cambiar de bandera sin pagar tasas, de manera excepcional, para compensarlos por los perjuicios producidos tras las sanciones a la Federación Búlgara por problemas administrativos.
Su rival en la quinta ronda, con negras, será precisamente su antiguo jefe, Topálov (ganador del español Jaime Santos en una partida muy técnica), mientras Krysa, también con negras, tendrá enfrente al ruso David Paravyán. Entre los once participantes con 2,5 puntos hay dos menores de 20 años: el iraní Parham Maghsoodloo y el ruso Andréi Yesipenko.
Luego hay 38 con dos puntos; entre ellos, otros argentinos, Fernando Peralta y Alan Pichot, así como el español José Carlos Ibarra. Sus compatriotas Sabrina Vega y Marta García lograron buenos resultados en la cuarta ronda el empatar con dos grandes maestros, el ruso Pável Tregúbov y la china Tingjie Lei, respectivamente.
