Un tercio de las partidas de las 40 primeras mesas terminaron en tablas en la ronda inicial

De la primera línea de favoritos solo tropezó el ruso Maxim Matlakov: tablas ante el sueco Erik Hedman, que tiene 322 puntos menos. Entre los derrotados contra pronóstico destaca el prodigioso indio Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa, el mejor del mundo de 14 años, quien cayó ante la también india Nandhidhaa. Y entre quienes cedieron medio punto están tres jugadores de postín de habla hispana: los españoles Miguel Santos y Jaime Santos, y el argentino Alan Pichot; los tres se enfrentaron también con mujeres: Belénkaya, Ántova y Heinemann, respectivamente. También tuvieron éxito dos españolas frente a grandes maestros: Sabrina Vega (tablas con el indio Sasikirán) y Mireia Represa (ganó al croata Kovácevic). Y una argentina, María Florencia Fernández, quien repartió el punto con una de las mejores del mundo, la ucrania Anna Muzychuk.
Entre los grandes favoritos están dos de los ocho participantes en el Torneo de Candidatos, a finales de marzo en Yekaterimburgo (Rusia), el chino Hao Wang y el ruso Kiril Alexeyenko. Y dos que se han quedado a las puertas de esa cita muy importante: el francés Maxime Vachier-Lagrave y el azerbaiyano Shajriyar Mamediárov. Así como cuatro miembros más de la élite, aparte del citado Matlakov: la leyenda viva Vasili Ivanchuk (Ucrania), el checo David Navara, el vietnamita Quang Liem Le y el británico Michael Adams.
Contrariamente a lo que dicta la situación geográfica de Gibraltar, la mayoría de los participantes en el Torneo de Maestros no son los británicos (18) ni los españoles (18) sino los indios (32) y los rusos (21). Pero, más allá de las nacionalidades o sexos, lo que define al ajedrez actual es la necesidad de mayor esfuerzo de los teóricamente superiores para doblegar a las supuestas víctimas. El entrenamiento con computadoras ha mejorado muchísimo el nivel técnico de estas, sobre todo en las aperturas y en la capacidad defensiva. Las partidas fáciles son una especie en periodo de extinción.
